Introduction

Everyone has been through those days, the day we felt sick, unable to get out of bed. Forget about going to work, getting food would be a struggle. It would be nice to have a butler or even our close ones to take care of us. But not all of us are that lucky, especially those that just moved out recently and don't know how to take care of themselves. I do understand that feeling personally. So, why not get an app that takes care of you for the day?

Introducing MedCare, a concept app that helps take care of your basic needs when you are sick. The core function is to enable sick patients to talk with a doctor via their phone. At the same time they can get food that is tailored to their condition, delivered to them. Or, find an easy to make recipe that you can make at home.

Background

I just moved out from home to go to college. That was the first time that I had to learn how to take care of myself. And I learn it the hard way. It was late at night, and I felt a little uncomfortable around my abdominal area. Not long after, I started getting all the symptoms of food poisoning. At this point I was too weak to go to a clinic, but I had to. Got on to an Uber and went to a 24 hour clinic. Spoke with the doctor and was waiting to get my medications. This is where things go south, this clinic does not accept credit or debit cards, and I have $2 in my wallet (typical college life struggles). They refuse to give me my medications before I pay. I tried to find the closest ATM (there are 5 banks within 3 minutes walk), none of them are open! So at this point I had to call my friend at 2am in the morning to get help. He came to pick me up, paid for my medication and dropped me back home.

This is how I got the inspiration of having an app that helps you in these situations.

Challenges

Challenges

There are several challenges I faced that were not in the story. These were some of them:

  • Getting an Uber ride at 1am, and waiting for them to come

  • Not sure which clinic is 24 hours, some of them are not listed on Google

  • Not able to get cash

  • Did not recover even after taking the meds

  • Forgotten to inform my lecturer that I am not able to attend class the next day

Research

To understand the more general challenges that people face while getting medical attention in a clinic, some research had to be done. These are some of the challenges that people face:

Long waiting time at clinics

University Technology MARA:
Average waiting time to see the doctor is 60 minutes.

They forget to take their medications

National Public Radio (NPR) Health analytics:
52% of people had forgotten to take their medication.

45% of people that forget to take medications are below 35 years old.

Does not follow diet that doctors recommend

People are lazy and like to eat whatever they want.

The typical idea of a healthy meal is boring and tasteless.

Patient's UI

3 simple steps to book an appointment

  1. Choose a clinic

  2. Select time of appointment

  3. Book appointment

Booking appointment

When it is almost time for the appointment, there will be a notification reminding you to go to that clinic. There is also a shortcut where the user can book a ride with just a click of a button.

Setting reminder

Patients can see the doctor’s diagnosis and set reminders to take the medications.

Get a ride

Getting food

Users can either get food that matches doctor's recommended diet delivered to them

OR

Find easy to make recipes on the app

Rating

After user's had recovered, they can rate the clinic or give a feedback to the clinic. Currently, doctors normally don't get a follow up from patients after diagnosing. This enables doctors to know what happened to their previous patients.

Nurse's UI

When patient arrives

It will show that the patient has arrived on the dashboard so the nurse in charge can register the patient.

After diagnosis

After the patient has been diagnosed by the doctor, a diagnosis will show with the prescribed medicine. This allows the nurse/pharmacist to get ready.

Doctor's UI

Before meeting patient

Doctors can send a short preset message to patient if they are not ready yet.

Diagnosis

When they are ready the doctor can start the diagnosis. In MedCare there are spaces to input all the important notes. It even includes a recommended diet section.

Medical history

Patient's medical history can be found. It is totally up to the patient to show or hide this information as it is regarded as private info.

Conclusion

There are multiple areas of concern that were not tackled in the final product. More research is needed in terms of medical laws.

Next steps:

  • More research on users

  • More research on medical laws

  • Colour contrast of interface

  • Adding call and video calling features to talk to doctors
